shanda.jpgHousing | Our evolving relationship with Prudential Northwest Properties has instilled a belief in the meaning of “home.” From basic self-discipline, the simplest of norms and standards, to formal education and/or job training, a stable home environment is the best place for healthy development. In 2004 we committed ourselves to this direction by creating our first transitional home for youth in Portland. Under the loving guidance of a caring “parent” who also holds a strong faith in God’s service, the house serves several youth at a given time. We require all residents to either be involved in educational programs or employed. We've since opened a second home in Vancouver and in the near future we plan to add several more transitional homes in the Portland/Vancouver area.

Outreach | Outreach goals are to connect with homeless youth, build trust, offer guidance, and establish lasting bonds in their lives. Since 1991, our volunteers have provided food, clothing and personal hygiene items to homeless youth. On Sunday mornings we provide a hot breakfast and facilitate an environment for those interested in spiritual guidance; on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights we offer “Family Night” where homeless youth can have dinner, spend time with positive adult role models, celebrate birthdays, and participate in relationship-building activities. Our intention is to expand outreach activities to seven nights a week. Several times each year our staff and volunteers provide weekend retreats for homeless youth to experience nature and life’s simple beauty. These retreats are unique to Transitional Youth, and through hands-on interaction facilitated by caring adults, youth can discover meaningful possibilities in environments beyond the streets. During Easter each year, 20 youth on average travel to Royal Ridges in Washington to rock climb, ride horses and enjoy songs by the campfire. Other outings have included trips to the coast, boating, camping and hiking.

Support | Our support of material and financial donations occur largely through the agents and staff of Prudential Northwest Properties. Many agents donate funds from real estate closings, in addition to making year-round clothing and material goods donations. We also hold fund raising events such as the Prudential Northwest Properties annual Transitional Youth Golf Tournament and Seasonal Celebration benefit concert.

Special thanks to Roger Pollock and Buena Vista Profit Partners for their ongoing support of Transitional Youth.
